Two Weeks In - Blog Post #2

This week has been tough, to say the least. Typically the first week of school is mostly syllabus learning. Not this program, we've dived right in head first, and honestly, I feel overwhelmed. On top of school chaos, I am currently looking to move with my girlfriend to a different apartment. The cost of our building has gone sky high, and it isn't fiscally responsible for remaining anymore. Everything considered this Genius Hour has honestly been a bit of a beacon of light. Most of the classes are very similar and feel very blended into one. However, this class feels very outside of the box. I never once mixed this class up with one of my other ones, always being the Online with Genius Hour Class.

During this hour that I took to myself, I did a lot of research and digging into what makes a successful genius hour project. The one thing that I found interesting and genuinely very calming was the rules section. There were only 3. You Have to; Research Something, Create Something & Present Something. The freedom to express myself however I see fit so long as I follow the rules is cathartic. As I previously spoke to, I can do a lot in film, whether it be editing, filming, photography etc. But Script Writing has never been a strong point. It has nothing to do with my creativity but completely to do with my ability to express my imagination.

I spent most of my time not writing a script but learning how to. I am blessed to still have contacts who work in the film industry with my previous work history. The time ended up going well over an hour, approaching the 3-hour mark, but I texted an old friend and met for coffee. Despite his forte being Commercials, a good scriptwriter is still a scriptwriter who you can learn from. We didn't go into massive details, but the steps of what makes a good script and how to better express my creativity was certainly brought out. Lots of the internet has people posting opinions on what makes something good, but to sit down with someone who gets paid to do so is invaluable. Even if it ended up buying him an Iced Coffee from Starbucks, it was a small price to pay.

The next four weeks will be interesting, to say the least. After my meeting with my old friend, I have a much better sense of expressing my creativity via scriptwriting. But with that newfound expression, I also can see the co-relations to the expression of self in all facets of my life. Whether as an educator thinking of new fun ways to be an educator or even just expressing the best way of learning the curriculum, I feel I am certainly on the right track to achieving my Genius Hour goal and answering the question posed.
