Week #5 - Gumshield

This week I titled my blog post, Gumshield, based on the song by UK Band Don Broco. So many lyrics can be interpreted in many different ways, and this song is no different. 

I put my gumshield in, protect me from myself

I interpret the lyrics as putting in your mouthguard and battling yourself, and this past week was a battle against many things. Whether it be managing work, school, personal life, and exhaustion, I feel like I won the battle. Over the past four weeks, I had roughly 5 different script ideas written and ready to go to submit, yet I ended up posting the shortest one I wrote but that I felt had the best content. Through a bunch of workshopping, editing, and changing everything, the script I ended up posting took inspiration from the song "I See Everything" by La Dispute, an American Post-Hardocre band from Michigan. The lyricist Jordan Dreyer frequently touches on tough topics, with this song being no different. I have listened to La Dispute since 2008 and their album "Somewhere at the bottom of the River Between Vega and Altair" and always felt the stories told would make for incredible short films. So when planning out my script concepts, I thought it would be fun to adapt a song of theirs into a script to see if it would work out. The others I wrote were all my own ideas, but something about this one just hit differently. The sadness which is conveyed in the song would work so well on film, while also provided an opportune base for a script. Ultimately, I had no struggles this week regarding the process of Tech8Y08, as a whole I was lacking motivation with everything course and class-wise but I powered through it, got all of my work done and feeling remotely ok with everything. From here, all I can hope is to finish up this class strong and end with a great mark which reflects how much I have enjoyed this class as a whole.

Week 4 - Ain't Nothin' Gonna Break My Stride

      Every week of school so far has followed a theme in my head. It's always been something I do where I do some self-reflection before the week to see where I am and how I feel about the coming week and the one which just passed. This week was tough on certain levels so it is going to take a little extra this week for me to get going and the momentum rolling to keep on top of my school work.      My one key takeaway from this week, my perfectionist nature is both a benefit and a hindrance. I have my script "done", which is such a subjective term. The script itself is almost done, and I feel confident in the ability to hand it on time, however, I keep going back and editing it, working on the small little details that feel so minuscule in the grand scheme of things. It gets to a point that feels very frustrating, as I don't feel that I will ever be 100% content with the final result I produce and submit. That being said though, there are positives to find...

Thank you for taking the time out of your life to check out my Genius Hour Blog. My big goal for this project is to write a script. Not an entire feature film script, but a short 10-minute film script. I worked in the film/advertising industry for three years, and one of my biggest weaknesses was scriptwriting. Editing a commercial or filming came naturally to me, but scriptwriting never did, and I never found the time to work and hone that craft.  I always have struggled with following through with my projects, which this Genius Hour project will help motivate me through that process. Scriptwriting is tricky to track, as you either complete it or don't, and there is no in-between. However, I will make written notes towards my classwork and stress feelings while working on my scriptwriting. This week, my stress levels are through the roof, and I look forward to having a creative output for my mind. The question I am asking myself for this Genius Hour is, "By having a creative ...

Week #6

What you learned about yourself is such a loaded question, as I discovered more of what frustrates me than positives. I found I needed music in the background to work, one time, I forgot my headphones at home and attempted to work on the project in a Starbucks, and I could not dial myself in enough to work. Also, I learned that I enjoy having a creative output, no matter what it may be. I took this Genius Hour concept and applied it to more of my life in ensuring I do not forget my own personal fun times and not just being dedicated to school and work. The challenges I faced the most were ensuring I was doing the projects on time and hitting every detail needed during the badges while completing my hour time. I found it easy to put off the project as, at times, it felt like fun versus an actual school project, so I was able to push it off in my mind and forget about it to an extent, then coming back to it with a sense of urgency.  If I could change one thing about this entire proje...
